2021-2022 World Championship Format
Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:57 pm
Earlier in the year when the league was a thought and not a reality, we had a proposal phase to decide all the key factors of a league. Now, months later, I think it’s important to look back on these proposals which I have updated slightly as some aspects naturally had to change.
The details of the 2021-2022 Top Gear E-Racing Championship have been developed and refined to make it as good as it can be. Below is how the current proposals look and some things we as a league need to decide.
So, what is the TGER Championship?
The format is a two tier approach to league racing within the same Grand Prix, aimed at improving inclusion and opportunity. The top guys will be battling for the Pirelli World Championship, whilst the second tier will battle out for the Bridgestone championship.
How will the tiering be decided?
Before the first race of the season, using data from peoples time trials, having a general understanding of drivers ability and even pre-season performance, we will look to place drivers in the correct tiers. This will happen through a consultation phase where drivers are told of their tiering. There will be an opportunity before we do officially start for people to raise concerns to make sure people are happy with their placing in the league.
So will there still be One World Championship table as there is in real life?
The short answer is yes! There will still be the standard World Championship table as there is in real life. The only difference is that within that table there will be three World Championship battles going on. Effectively there is nothing stopping someone from a lower division coming ahead of someone from a higher division in the overall standings, but the World Championships at the end of the season will be handed out based on the splits. The new and updated table will show this clearly.
Are you always going to be in the same World Championship?
No! At the end of every season, the Champion of each division is moved up to a higher tier and the lowest placed driver in each division will move down. This will work on a ratio of 1:1 where one driver goes up and one down so that each division remains competitive. For example 2 drivers moving down from the Pirelli World Championship could make it very difficult for any existing Bridgestone runners to claim top stop. Therefore there will only be very limited moves between seasons, unless there is clear evidence of a driver being mis-placed.
How many drivers will be in each tier?
This will depend on the amount of drivers we have competing. If there are 12 drivers there will be groups of 6 and for 16 drivers groups of 8. If there is an odd number then the top tier will have the least drivers, for example if we have 17 drivers there will be 8:9 in each split.
Can drivers be added during the season?
Every league has people come and go throughout the season. New drivers will be placed into the correct tier after successful induction. If they do not join within the first 4 races of the season they will not be eligible to become World Champion or for promotion/relegation in their first season, but will still accumulate points as normal. This is to stop people joining a tier later and disrupting the fight for the championship had they for example been placed wrongly and taking away from the current drivers. It has to be said that it is unlikely that someone would be able to mount a title challenge starting later in the season anyway, but this is to protect those who were committed from the start. The new driver is able to go for titles starting their second season.
Will there be one points system for the overall league?
The league will shortly vote upon a points system. This points system will run either from 1st-10th, 1st-12th or 1st-15th pending approval, to allow enough points for both sectors. The points that you attain will depend on where you have come in the overall race. Therefore you will likely see the Pirelli championship having the most points, the Bridgestone having the second most points. Again, the updated table will give you an example.
Will there be a ruling on team mates selection?
Ideally team mates should be selected from different tiers. This is to deter drivers to from having ‘super teams’ and create a closer constructors championship. However, as people are still joining the league I am opening up so that people can choose their team mates, but as I’ve said I encourage people to pick team mates that aren’t going to be create a super team.
What about the Constructor Championship?
That will continue as normal, team mates from different tiers will accumulate points towards becoming Constructor Champions!
So let’s look back at some of these points in simple terms:
- 2 World Championship Titles on offer under the branding of Pirelli and Bridgestone.
- Drivers placed in tiers based on performance
- The tiers will be placed within one race.
- Participants in each tier will be dependant on the amount of drivers on the grid.
- Promotion and Relegation system at the end of each season
- Points for the majority but not all of the grid so that each tier can accumulate points
- Team mates to be picked from different tiers if possible to avoid super teams
- Constructor Championship will remain the same
If there are question so far PLEASE raise them in this thread so that we can iron out any potential issues. Now, I hope that the format is making sense so far so I would like to move on to some potential points system for the league.
Proposal 1:
Points for the top 10, mostly geared towards having less than 15 participants;
25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1
Proposal 2:
Points for the top 12, mostly geared towards having 15-16 participants;
25, 20, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1
Proposal 3:
Points for top 15, mostly gears at having a full grid
30, 25, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1
Points for fastest lap:
Scrap this altogether
Point for fastest lap as it is currently
Point for fastest lap in each split
I would also like to confirm that pre-season will begin 25.07.2021. There will be a period in the future to decide what pre-season will entail, such as how many races, track selection and distance driven. It is likely that the season will officially begin around the 15th August with a week either side.
As I said before, I hope that this has given some clarity to the format of the 2021 World Championship. Should people oppose the plans, then we will go back to the standard format or look at other alternatives. Please state which point proposal you wish to go with and feel free to share your views.
Thank you.
